• SOFTBALL SPORTS MEDICINE

    The mission of the Georgia Tech Sports Medicine Department is to provide comprehensive health care to the student athletes of Georgia Tech. This is accomplished through education and prevention, evaluation, and rehabilitation of all athletic related injuries. The department maintains a high level of ethical and professional standards to insure the student athlete receives the highest level of healthcare.

    The vision of the Georgia Tech Sports Medicine Department is to continue to grow, through research, education, and a commitment to excellence in order to provide the best possible health care to our student-athletes.

      • THE GEORGIA TECH SPORTS MEDICINE STAFF NUMBERS NEARLY 40 PEOPLE, INCLUDING 14 DOCTORS, SEVEN STAFF ATHLETIC TRAINERS AND TWO PHYSICAL THERAPISTS.
      • WE HAVE SEVEN ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOMS TO CARE FOR OUR STUDENT-ATHLETES.
      • OUR CHIROPRACTOR IS THE ONLY THREE-TIME FOOTBALL ALL-AMERICAN IN GT HISTORY.
      • OUR HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER, JAY SHOOP, IS IN THREE HALLS OF FAME (EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY, SOUTHEAST ATHLETIC TRAINERS’ ASSOCIATION AND THE GEORGIA ATHLETIC TRAINERS’ ASSOCIATION)
    • OUR SPORTS MEDICINE CLINIC HAS TREATED PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES (INCLUDING TWO ALL-STARS AND A GOLD GLOVE WINNER), OLYMPIANS, A FORMER PRESIDENT, A NOBLE PEACE PRIZE WINNER, ACTORS, AND MANY OTHERS.

    JAY SHOOP

    DIRECTOR OF SPORTS MEDICINE (FOOTBALL, GOLF)

    Jay Shoop, a 40-year veteran of the sports medicine profession, returned to Georgia Tech in 2002 as director of sports medicine after a year as head trainer for the Detroit Lions. Shoop, who oversees all areas of the sports medicine program for the Yellow Jackets’ 17 varsity sports, previously served as Tech’s director of sports medicine and head trainer from 1987-1999.

    CARLA GILSON

    ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER (VOLLEYBALL, SOFTBALL)

    Gilson joined the Georgia Tech staff in 1997 and is responsible for the care of the Tech volleyball and softball teams. Gilson has also worked with women’s basketball and with most of the women’s sports in her time with the Yellow Jackets.

    I-SHIEN SHIAO

    ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER (FOOTBALL, M&W TENNIS)

    Shiao joined the Jackets’ full time staff in 2009. Her primary role is the football assistant athletic trainer; she also oversees the men’s and women’s tennis teams. Shiao is no stranger to Georgia Tech. Previously, she was a graduate assistant at Tech working with women’s tennis and football teams, as well as an intern before her assistantship.

    WALTER SMITH

    ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER (BASEBALL)

    One of the veterans in the Georgia Tech baseball program is trainer Walter Smith, whose primary responsibility with the Tech athletic program is serving as the trainer for the baseball team. Smith joined the Tech sports medicine staff in 1985 and has seen six of the Yellow Jackets’ ACC championships, 21 NCAA regional appearances and all three College World Series trips.

    RICHARD STEWART

    ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER (MEN’S BASKETBALL, M&W SWIMMING)

    Stewart assumed the role of men’s basketball athletic trainer for the Jackets in August 2007. He also oversees the care for the men’s and women’s swimming team. Stewart came to Georgia Tech from Virginia Tech, where he was an assistant athletic trainer for football, as well as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for football and men’s soccer before working for the Hokies full-time. During his time at Virginia Tech, Stewart also served as assistant athletic trainer for the Cologne Centurions of NFL Europe.

    FELICIA TUCKER

    ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER (WOMEN’S BASKETBALL, CHEERLEADING)

    Tucker joined the Yellow Jackets in 2009 and serves as the athletic trainer for the women’s basketball team. Tucker also oversees the care for the cheerleading squad.

    Tucker came to Georgia Tech after spending one season at Winston-Salem State. During her time at State, she was responsible for the volleyball and women’s basketball teams.

    PAUL WOLKOFF

    ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER (M&W CROSS COUNTRY, M&W TRACK & FIELD)

    Wolkoff joined the Yellow Jacket staff in 2008 and is responsible for the care of the men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams. Wolkoff came to Georgia Tech from Progressive Health Aviation Services where he worked for one year. Before that he was the head athletic trainer at LaGrange College for 10 years where he oversaw all aspects of medical care and coverage for a 16-sport athletic program.
